Balance is the key to the Rainbow Diet. The application of the diet is based on the idea that all chakras, even though they have different vibratory rates and different types of awareness, are created equal. All of them must be nourished. The Rainbow Diet calls for the full spectrum of foods for the full spectrum of the chakras throughout the spectrum of the day.
The morning starts with the ﬁrst three chakras: red, orange, and yellow-gold. Midday is the third through the fifth chakras: yellow-gold, green, and blue in color. Evening is the ﬁfth through the seventh chakras: blue, indigo, violet-purple, and white or gold in color. This sequence aligns with the general pattern for the awakening of the chakras. The daily stimulation and balancing of the chakras by the use of the appropriately colored foods maintains a balance that is important in spiritual life. If we only try to stimulate and charge the “higher” chakras, over a long period of time it is possible to become subtly uncentered or ungrounded.
There are exceptions to this spectral pattern. One is the use of a sin-gle color food for limited periods of time to energize a speciﬁcally weak-ened chakra and its associated organs, glands, and nerve centers. There are also times when one wants to activate a speciﬁc chakra gently for a short period of time by eating those foods that will stimulate that chakra.
The Rainbow Diet is not a technique for Enlightenment. It is simply a support system to aid in a harmonious and centered spiritual unfold-ing. It is a whole-person, full-chakra approach to nutrition. It is an organ-izing principle and a level of food awareness for helping us develop our own individualized diets for spiritual life. The principles of the Rain-bow Diet are appropriate for any level of intake of vegetables, fruits, nuts, seeds, and grains. In this diet, white foods, which represent the full rainbow spectrum, can be used with any meal. White foods include vegetables like cauliflower and daikon radish. Although color coding does not apply for ﬂesh foods, one can be a transitional vegetarian, lacto-ovo-vegetarian (the eggshell color is the code), lacto-vegetarian, vegan, or fruitarian, and the Rainbow Diet principles still are very functional.
Let’s look at the basics of the Rainbow Diet and the timing of meals.

Red, orange, and yellow-golden foods are eaten for supporting the first,
second, and third chakras. This includes fruits such as apples, oranges,
and bananas. Fruits are good cleansers and aid in any unfinished digestion
from the night before. The golden colors also include the golden
and brown grains such as wheat, rice, corn, buckwheat, oats, and rye.
The yellow-gold color also includes most nuts and seeds such as sesame,
sunflower, pumpkin, and almonds. Once nuts and seeds begin to germinate
by soaking and sprouting, they become alkaline in their
effect in the body and combine well with fruits. These soaked nuts and
seeds in the morning are particularly good for people with blood sugar
—————— Midday ——————
Yellow-golden, green, and blue foods are eaten for enhancing the third,
fourth, and fifth chakras. The predominant color for the midday meal
is green. This is the time for eating salads and other vegetable dishes –
sprouts, avocados, lettuce, and dark greens. We could also eat fruit meals
of green apples, watermelon, or fruits of other colors of the third through
the fifth chakras. Although the main color focus is green, it does not
mean that minor amounts of other color foods such as tomatoes cannot
be included. Carrots, which are in the orange-gold spectrum, also fit in
—————— Evening ——————
Blue, indigo, purple, gold, and white foods enhance the fifth, sixth, and
seventh chakras. Gold is included in the evening because purple and
gold are complements, and the crown chakra is associated with golden,
as well as purple, Light. The main evening meal’s colors are purple,
white, and gold. In the context of arising early to meditate, light dinners
eaten before sunset are the most appropriate. Common purple foods
in the vegetable kingdom include eggplant, purple cabbage, dulse, and
beets. Rudolf Steiner said beets stimulate mind-brain function and act as
excellent blood purifiers. We can also include some greens and sprouts.
The golden foods include the golden grains such as wheat, rice, millet,
and oats. Golden nuts and seeds such as sunflower, pumpkin, cashews,
sesame, and almonds also fit in.
Extensive food lists for morning and midday colors have not been given because these colors are easy to find. It is also important not to be confined and make an obsessive religion out of it, so the lists have been minimized. The blue-indigo-purple spectrum does not so readily come to mind, so a list of some of the foods has been included.

Grains: different wheat varieties, rye, oats, barley, corn, rice,
sorghum, triticale, millet, and quinoa.
Fruits: dates, golden apples, apricots,
golden grapefruit, golden pears, kumquat, loquat, oil palm, lady finger
banana, breadfruit, cantaloupe, mango, papaya, and pineapple.
Nuts and seeds: sunflower, sesame, soy, wild hazelnuts, filberts,
almonds, European walnuts, black walnuts, pistachio, brazil nut, Queensland
nut, bambarra nut, and pumpkin seeds.
Legumes: lentils, cowpea, and chickpea.
Vegetables: gold pumpkin, cauliflower, jicama, white asparagus, white radish,
and daikon radish, butternut squash.
Herbs: cinnamon, horseradish, caraway, coriander, dill, Spanish
onion, yellow or white onions, chives, leeks, scallions, shallots,
garlic, and ginger.

Grains: purple corn and amaranth.
Fruits: bilberry-whortberry, blackthorn berry, black cherry, black
figs, spartan apple, durondean pear, all varieties of purple prunes and
plums, blackberry, dewberry, raisins, all varieties of purple grapes, mulberry,
passionfruit, huckleberry, elderberry and cacao.
Legumes: Canadian wonder bean, black gram seeds, purple kidney
bean, climbing purple padded kidney bean, vanilla bean, adulation bean,
and purple beans (“green” beans which are purple in color).
Vegetables: eggplant, purple cabbage, beet, purple broccoli, kohlrabi,
turnips, purple asparagus, dulse, nori, arame, hijiki, and many purple sea
vegetables, sea kale, light purple bamboo shoots, artichoke petals, winter
radish, purple potato, olives, water chestnut, Jerusalem artichoke,
and purple sweet potatoes.
Herbs: mallow flowers, basil, heather, rosemary, sage, betony, thyme,
wild passion flower, marjoram, black pepper, milkthistle flowers, and

This is not an all-inclusive list, but certainly gives the imagination a beginning. It is important to note that some plants change color as they mature. Pineapple is an example; in its earlier stages, the VAS test is most active for the green vibration of the heart chakra. As it turns more golden, it tests more positively for the gold vibration of the crown chakra. The outer color at the time the plant is eaten is the main key to use. Some colors do not exactly match the primary color for a particular chakra, but are a combination of colors or fall mid-spectrum between two chakra colors. For example, sesame and sunflower seeds have the strongest VAS response between the second and third chakras and at the crown chakra. These findings indicate a gradual color spectrum transition between chakras. Using this VAS system, it might be possible to select nutrients based on the locations of the thirty-two vertebrae of the spine and their associated organs, glands, and chakras. Such a system, however, does not have the simple clarity that the Rainbow Diet offers.
The Rainbow Diet is a natural and simple approach to nutrition that focuses on a twenty-four-hour cycle. It is easy to eat low- and moderate glycemic fruits and some soaked and ground seeds and nuts in the morning, a green salad at lunch, and a beet and dulse focused salad or soup for dinner. For people who eat only one or two meals per day, it would be good to create the rainbow cycle with the colors of snacks. With a one-meal-per-day cycle and no snacks to put the other colors into the diet, it is useful to trust your intuition of which of the chakra groups need the most balancing. On some days certain colors will appeal, and on others we may want nothing to do with the those colors.
For the two-meal-a-day person, the same idea holds. If not snacking to get the color spectrum in, then one can develop a cyclic spectrum over a two-day cycle. Eating foods by their colors is like eating a particular color from the sun. It brings us closer to the forces of Nature.
